While Ferguson's side have now gone five matches without a win, Liverpool caretaker manager Phil Thompson saluted a triumph that completed his club's best sequence of results against United since 1910. Thompson, taking charge while Gerard Houllier recovers from heart surgery, said: 'The players all worked extremely hard and that is the first thing you've got to do to get anything out of United. I spoke to Gerard this morning and his message to the players was not to worry about United having the lion's share of possession.
'Beating United is not the be-all and end-all at this stage of the season. Being ahead of them in May is what matters because it would mean we were champions.'
