Ferdinand makes his big move

Rio Ferdinand put pen to paper on his £18million transfer to Leeds United today and admitted: "This is a big step forward for me."

The England centre-back, who will watch today's Premiership clash against Arsenal from the stands, added: "I am pleased to be joining such an ambitious club.

West Ham accepted the bid which came as a big surprise to me."I have realised my ambition of joining a club going forward - that coincided with my ambitions.

"The manager (David O'Leary) and his thoughts and ideas played a big part in my decision.

"It wasn't a big decision on the ambition front. West Ham gave me my chance in football and I owe them a lot. This is a new chapter in my career. European footballis what I need and want."

Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale said: "Today is a very special day for Leeds United and a special day for English football."We are often criticised for not supporting English talent in this country. Leeds have done more than most before today to support talent from England, British Islesand southern Ireland.

"We have had a bit of criticism for paying so much but we believe we have got a bargain.

"This underlines our commitment and ambitions. I believe in the next couple of years people will acknowledge that Leeds have arrived.

"The Premiership and Europe will take note that we are here to stay, here for titles and silverware."

Ridsdale added: "A lot's been made about the price tag, but Rio's just a footballer. It's a market place and he is a precious commodity."

Ferdinand admitted the prospect of Champions League football had been a big attraction for him, but conceded the move was "a big step forward for me."

He revealed he was persuaded to leave West Ham by "the fact they accepted the bid".

He added: "The chairman came to speak to me and impressed me beyond belief. I can see the side is beginning to grow."The fee doesn't really concern me, I need to play football. West Ham need to make money. It is a good deal for both parties.

"The price tag doesn't concern me, these things are decided by the money men, like Mr Ridsdale and those at West Ham."

Ferdinand also revealed the fact that Elland Road boss David O'Leary had been an international centre-half during his playing career was a factor in his decision tojoin the club.

"The manager played the same position and has a lot to offer me. He was a world class centre-half.

"It doesn't bother me what formation I play in."

Ferdinand also claimed knowing several Leeds players had helped make his mind up.

"I've spoken to a few of the lads, I know a few of them from the (England) Under-21s and the senior side, and they were all happy.

"I'm not coming to somewhere where I am a stranger, I know a lot of the players here.

"Hopefully we can achieve something this year."
