Fan power wins in title dispute

Jannie de Beer, whose five drop goals for South Africa brought England's worst World Cup campaign to a sorry end almost 18 months ago, is returning to the English game in the hope of rebuilding his career.

Saracens, hit by injuries to Thomas Castaignede and Duncan MacRae, are hiring him for the remaining 10 weeks of the season trusting that his goalkicking helps them secure a home tie in the play-offs via a top-four finish.

The South African fly half has not played since damaging a knee 10 months ago.

De Beer's return will have been noted by his previous English employer, Sale. He joined them two years ago

following the collapse of London Scottish, then angered Sale by signing a contract with South Africa.

If the South African is found guilty by the Welsh Rugby Union, he could be banned for up to a month. Garvey is alleged to have punched Caerphilly prop Graham Thomas and hooker and captain Justin Hughes during Saturday's Welsh Scottish League clash at Virginia Park, which Newport won 53-8. Caerphilly team manager Gordon Pritchard said: 'I am really disappointed. Newport are a top side who were on their way to a 50-point win. They beat us fair and square. We didn't make a fuss at the time, but we have two players with facial injuries and that's not acceptable.

'We felt that something happened to cause those injuries so we have decided to cite Adrian Garvey.'
