Frank Lampard has hailed the new self-belief in the England team after their 2-1 win over Ukraine left Fabio Capello's men racing seemingly unchallenged towards the 2010 World Cup

England recorded their fifth win in as many matches to move five points clear at the top of Group Six thanks to a late strike from John Terry, after Andriy Shevchenko's 74th-minute goal had cancelled out Peter Crouch's opener and looked to have earned a point for the visitors.

Yet even on a night when they didn't play well, England still managed to record an important win — a quality Lampard admitted they previously lacked.

The Chelsea midfielder said: "Maybe you wouldn't have seen that reaction a couple of years ago. There is more confidence around the team, which has come from the results and performances over the last 12 months.

"We are united as a group, and have a more confident outlook. When you have that, it is much easier to react well to going a goal down or being pegged back.

"Everyone has always been confident when they play for their clubs, but there was a period of time when we weren't performing as a group for our country.
