But the Croat fans do have form when it comes to racist abuse towards Fabio Capello's side.
Their fans directed monkey chants towards black players when the teams faced each other in Portugal during the Euro 2004 finals, and were specifically warned that a repeat could cost their side Euro 2008 qualifying points when the teams met in Zagreb in 2006.
Piara Powar, a director for the anti-racism campaign Kick It Out, said: "Their fans are being monitored for incidents of racial abuse and evidence of far-right activities.
"A number of preventative initiatives are under way with Croatian fan groups, the more progressive of whom understand the damage these types of incidents do to the country and its people.
"Longer term, we are involved in a European campaign to ensure to all governments, football associations and clubs know what political and educational action they need to take."
