Ex-Spurs boss joins rookie at Watford

With all his years of experience, Keith Burkinshaw will be relied upon to help guide rookie manager Adrian Boothroyd in the task of saving Watford from the drop.

Boothroyd, 34, has been named as the successor to Ray Lewington, who was sacked last week, despite having no managerial experience at the top level.

Burkinshaw, 68, managed Tottenham between 1976-1984 before a year in charge at West Brom in the mid-1990s.

Boothroyd was appointed first-team coach at Leeds last summer, where he worked under Kevin Blackwell. He had moved into coaching when he prematurely retired at the age of 27, following an undistinguished career as a defender at Bristol Rovers, Huddersfield, Hearts, Mansfield and Peterborough.

At Peterborough he was given his first opportunity to move into coaching when he was appointed assistant academy director before he took over as youth team coach at Norwich in February 2001.

In October 2003, he quit Norwich to take over as youth development manager at West Brom before he was given the chance to join Blackwell's staff at Leeds.
