Escape for injured Edu

Arsenal stand-in captain Edu will escape Football Association action despite the mass brawl that followed his two-footed tackle in the Carling Cup win against Everton.

The Brazilian was at the centre of a huge row with the Everton players over his antics in Arsenal's 3-1 win last night.

Edu ended up in the wars with a broken toe that will keep him out for around six weeks but Goodison manager David Moyes was furious that he was not sent off for a twofooted challenge that sparked a huge bust-up between the two sides.

Moyes said: "The game turned on the referee not sending Edu off. We were 1-0 up and then Edu made a twofooted tackle over the ball on James McFadden.

"If he had been sent off, it would have changed the game. Definitely." After the challenge, 19 players were involved in an unseemly clash.

Edu grabbed Tim Cahill round the throat and had the favour returned by McFadden. Referee Alan Wiley had to intervene to calm things down.

The FA revealed today that they had investigated the incident but had decided not to take the matter any further. A spokesman said: "We have spoken to Alan Wiley and he said he was in a position to deal with the incident fully, so no further action will be taken."

Edu limped off in the 65th minute to be replaced by Sebastian Larsson, joining Gilberto Silva and Sol Campbell on an injured list that also includes promising French full-back Gael Clichy. Edu - who was returning after a lengthy lay-off with a calf injury - had an X-ray which confirmed that he had broken a toe on his right foot. Although he will not be in plaster he won't regain full fitness until the New Year.
