Eriksson warns Becks on behaviour

"We're backing David, it's as simple as that," said Lampard. "Everyone makes mistakes but when the goalkeeper slips up it's often a goal. He's our No 1, though, so we'll back him.

"I wouldn't blame him for not saving the free-kick. I was in the wall and it swerved over us and into the corner. It was a good free-kick.

"I know there will be criticism and we'll take more stick if we don't win on Wednesday. That's fair enough because we need to start this group well so we don't have a hill to climb later on. Remember, we have to play Wales at home next month.

James said: "I should have saved it. Unfortunately, mistakes happen but it's gone now and that's life. (Austria goalkeeper) Alex Manninger handled the ball outside the box in the first half but got away with it. That was a red-card offence.

"It doesn't seem as though we are having the luck at the moment. Now we have to look forward. A decent result in Poland on Wednesday and we'll all be happy."

England look certain to retain the left-sided partnership of Wayne Bridge and Ashley Cole on Wednesday, providing the Chelsea fullback recovers from the Achilles tendon injury which forced him off during the second half against Austria.

"I think they did very well out there," said Eriksson. "I know Wayne is not used to playing in that position but whoever I had put there would have been in the same boat.

"We don't have a natural player there but I thought there were a lot of overlapping between them and it worked out very well. There were a lot of good combinations."

Lampard also believed the combination of the two London-based players worked well.

He said: "There was always someone available out on the left and considering Wayne has played there only once before at international level, I thought he did very well."
