England v Scotland - the facts

This is sport's longest-running international fixture.

The nations first met in 1871 in Edinburgh and, except for interruptions owing to odd disputes and two world wars, have played annually ever since. From 1877, the sides have competed for the Calcutta Cup, a trophy made out of melted-down rupees which was donated by the Calcutta Rugby Football Club on their demise as a lasting memorial. There have been 117 official matches. England lead by 60 wins to 40 with 17 games drawn.

England's Kid Lowe scored the first hat-trick of tries in this fixture in 1914, helping his side win 16-15 to take the Triple Crown. Eleven of the 30 players appearing in that last game before the First World War were subsequently killed in action. The only other hat-trick went to John Carleton when Bill Beaumont's side sealed the Grand Slam at Murrayfield in 1980.

Scotland's best win was 33-6 at Murrayfield in 1986 when Gavin Hastings set a Scottish record, scoring 21 points. In total, the former full-back notched up a record 65 points in Calcutta Cup matches.

Rob Andrew returned a perfect kicking record at Twickenham in 1995 when he kicked 24 points, the highest by a player in a match in this fixture.

Scotland's win at Murrayfield last season ended a record run of 10 England victories. The sequence included the record score and biggest margin of victory for the matches when England won 41-13 at Twickenham in 1997.

Their supporters have had only four wins to cheer at Twickenham in the intervening 90 years. England have won 30 and there have been five draws.

In 1926, the Scots won 17-9 to become the first European nation to win on the Rugby Union's new ground. A dozen years passed before Wilson Shaw, leading by example by scoring two of side's five tries, steered Scotland to a Triple Crown win in the first televised rugby international.

Scotland twice came near to winning at Twickenham in the Sixties, only to be robbed by last-minute England tries. Richard Sharp dummied his way over to bring England a 10-8 win in 1963 and two years later Andy Hancock ran the length of the pitch to force a 3-3 draw. Peter Brown's casual conversion of Chris Rea's late try in 1971 gave Scotland their third victory on the ground (16-15).
