Whether England fans will be equally thrilled is hard to judge. The fact that a group of key players - all single men, although Butt brought along fiancèe Shelley Barlow - were out on the town on their first night in Dubai, a week before England's first warm-up against South Korea and 19 days before their first World Cup fixture against Sweden, is enough to bring back memories of the bad old days of players' misbehaviour.
This, however, was nothing like that. Although Campbell was spotted leaning over a balcony with a pint of lager in his hand, there is no suggestion that any of the players was drunk or even that many of them were drinking at all.
It is not clear yet what Sven-Goran Eriksson's attitude will be. A fleet of Jaguars has been laid on to ferry the players around town, which could be taken as implying that he takes a relaxed attitude.
Eriksson has already gone on the record as saying that he will not be imposing an alcohol ban during the World Cup, although he added: "Excess is stupid. If we want to win the World Cup. we have to behave like professional footballers on and off the pitch."
