England set to call up Lewis

Jon Lewis could be the one new name in the England Test squad for the winter tour of South Africa, to be announced at Lord's tomorrow.

The Gloucestershire seamer, who took 75 championship wickets last summer and has 51 already this year, is a decent bet to fill the one obvious gap confronting England's selectors at the end of an extraordinarily successful Test summer.

Captain Michael Vaughan and coach Duncan Fletcher need an additional pace bowler to back up the established quintet of Steve Harmison, Matthew Hoggard, Jimmy Anderson, Simon Jones and Andrew Flintoff for the five-Test tour.

Somerset's Andrew Caddick has experience, Lancashire's Sajid Mahmood has youthful promise and Martin Saggers, of Kent, filled in usefully last winter and earlier this summer.

But Lewis, who will be 29 on Thursday, has the track record to suggest that he could turn good county results into solid England achievement.

England must also decide which batsman to disappoint out of Mark Butcher, Robert Key and Ian Bell, check that Gareth Batty remains the best back-up to Ashley Giles and consider whether, having dropped Chris Read last winter, they now need a different understudy wicketkeeper.
