Hoggard made his way back while Vaughan scrambled to safety. "The rocks were hellish sharp," said Batty. "As I tried to get up, another wave knocked me over."
It was Vaughan who attracted the attention of the lifeguards. "It was his waving that caught the attention of the lifeguards and about six of them came flying out with rings and all sorts."
Batty suffered only a few cuts and bruises but is now "the subject of much mickey-taking" from his team-mates.
One lifeguard said Batty had only himself to blame. "The problem was he went out too far where the tides are strongest," he said.
