England clinch dramatic win

But Hoggard the bowler has been nothing but a thoroughbred for England over the past nine months or so and, here, he single-handedly reduced South Africa to 86 for five while completing the first 10-wicket haul of his Test career.

It was a brilliant performance on a still essentially trustworthy pitch - and it reduced South Africa to nervous wrecks as another see-sawing Test tilted heavily towards England.

Their star man here has often had to play third or fourth fiddle to Steve Harmison, Flintoff and Simon Jones during 2004. Hoggard wasn't even man-of-the-match after bagging a hat-trick in Barbados nine months ago.

But, during this series, Vaughan has been able to rely on him throughout while Harmison, especially, continuesto struggle. The first innings of this match brought England's shaggy-haired seamer some decent reward with figures of five for 144. But the man himself reckoned it was the worst he had bowled on this trip because far too many runs were given away.

But today not even could have found fault with his two spells before tea. Using the new ball, he jagged one back off the seam during his third over to pin Abraham de Villiers in front of the stumps.

Then, in his fifth, he accounted for the two Jacques with consecutive deliveries. Swinging a ball between Rudolph's bat and pad was a nice bonus. But getting rid of Kallis instantly really was the stuff of dreams. South Africa's best batsman has spent nearly 24 hours at the crease during this series. Today he lasted only a minute, edging an intended defensive stroke that was expertly taken by Marcus Trescothick at first slip even though keeper Geraint Jones dived in front of the fielder.

First innings century-maker Herschelle Gibbs was not going to come quietly, of course, and he had blazed his way past 50 by the time South Africa lost their fourth wicket with 80 on the board. Boeta Dippenaar tried to drive the returning Hoggard but only sliced to Ashley Giles in the gully. Then, next over, Mark Boucher thin-edged to Jones.

England knew they could not afford to waste any time. As a result, reserve players Gareth Batty and Paul Collingwood were sent to act as ball boys in front of the stands so precious second were not frittered away retrieving boundary blows. Although there were still a possible 38 overs left at tea, England's chances looked a little less bright when Vaughan dropped Nicky Boje during the second over after the interval.

But next over, Boje poked a return catch to Hoggard to leave South Africa at 118 for six.

Smith had to enter the fray at that stage and he never flinched during a stand of 45 with Gibbs before the latter was trapped lbw by Giles on 98.

Soon after, Shaun Pollock edged Flintoff to Jones. Makhaya Ntini negotiated 16 deliveries but his 17th, from Flintoff, pinned him in front of the stumps. But then Smith was dropped before Vaughan brought back Hoggard for one final go.

And he finally struck when Steyn edged to Jones to leave England celebrating their first win in Johannesburg since 1956.

Vaughan said: "This is an amazing win. Full credit to the boys, specially Marcus Trescothick and the bowlers. For them to keep running in was a tremedous effort in this heat."
