Edwards set for Sunday service

Jonathan Edwards will be given a special send-off into retirement in front of a TV audience of millions on Sunday's final night of the world championships.

The triple jumper ended an illustrious career with a disappointing performance in Paris, when he only managed two modest jumps. But even before the 37-year-old Olympic champion had stepped onto the track, world athletics officials had begun making plans for a special ceremony to mark the end of his career.

World record holder Edwards was in tears last night because of the warm welcome he received from the Paris fans, and more emotion is expected from Sunday's capacity crowd.

"He deserves a special tribute after such an excellent career, especially because of the way he has behaved during his career," IAAF general secretary Istvan Gyulai said. "We are working on something for the last day."

Edwards said: "I can retire with no regrets. The ovation I received when walking off the track will stay with me for the rest of my life."
