Edu will escape FA rap

Arsenal midfielder Edu will escape any punishment for his part in the fracas which marred yesterday's win over Manchester City.

Former Arsenal striker Nicolas Anelka was sent off after a pushing match with Ashley Cole. Edu joined in and referee Alan Wiley booked the two Arsenal players, although it was unclear at the time whether the Brazilian had been cautioned.

Confirmation that he was yellow-carded means that Wiley saw the part he played in the incident and took what he deemed to be the appropriate action. The Football Association will now not interfere.

It also seems likely that Arsenal will avoid being subjected to an inquiry into the melee. Video replays of the incident show that, apart from Cole, Anelka and Edu, the other players involved were trying to pull team-mates away to prevent trouble.

Anelka later told his manager, Kevin Keegan: "I was elbowed."

Cole defended Anelka when he said: "We should have been given the same punishment. He shouldn't have done what he did but I don't think he should've got the red card. It should have been both of us off or just a yellow card."

New signing Jose Antonio Reyes made an impressive debut as a substitute and will be needed in the coming weeks as Sylvain Wiltord is out with an ankle injury.
