Edman on new high for Spurs

Erik Edman believes his 40-yard wonder goal against Liverpool could mark the turning point in his Tottenham career.

The Swedish defender has struggled to hold down a first-team place this season with Thimothee Atouba often chosen ahead of him at left-back.

But Edman has started the last three matches and claimed first Spurs goal with a spectacular opener in Saturday's 2-2 draw at Anfield.

The 26-year-old, who also scored for Sweden in their 3-0 World Cup qualifier win in Bulgaria three weeks ago, said: "It's been a great month for me, winning and scoring with Sweden and also getting the chance to play three games in a row for Tottenham.

"It's getting towards the end of the season and I now just want to keep on playing and get as many appearances as possible.

"I once scored a goal direct from a corner, but that was a bit lucky so I would say the goal at Liverpool was the best of my career.

"When got the ball I was a little bit confused. I thought maybe I should pass or cross it. You have to decide really quickly and I didn't see much else on so I thought the best thing was to shoot."

It turned out to be the right decision as his left-foot drive ended up in the top corner. Luis Garcia equalised for before Robbie Keane put Spurs back in front, only for them to be denied a first away win of 2005 by Sami Hyypia's volley.

With Steven Gerrard missing a penalty, Edman admitted Spurs were fortunate to emerge with a point, but feels it was deserved given previous hard-luck stories this season.

He said: "To be honest, in the second half we didn't play well and everyone knows that, but still we hung in there and fought for each other.

"We got away with it and 2-2 was a great result for us. So far we have had a lot of bad luck away from home, especially with refereeing decisions, so maybe the Anfield result was a bit of payback."

The Arsenal-Manchester United FA Cup final means UEFA Cup qualification now extends seventh place in the Premiership. Spurs are seventh at the moment and Edman sees no reason for them to falter. He added: "We have to win all three remaining home games. Everyone is now focussed on West Brom on Wednesday which will be tough."

Meanwhile, Spurs have announced a pre-season friendly with Porto at White Hart Lane on 6 August.
