Durham dumped out in shock result

Durham are almost a fixture in the semi-finals and lost last year's final to Campion but their hopes of more glory died at Barnard Castle in the third round.

Barnard Castle, whose famous rugby sons include Rob Andrew andthe Underwood brothers, had already beaten Durham in a regular fixture and the cup-tie was much anticipated. Durham took the lead when David Kell put a penalty over with the strong wind at his back but Matthew Tait replied with the first of his hat-trick of tries after 20 minutes, gathering aloose ball and racing 40 metres to score.

Tait's second under the posts came courtesy of an excellent run by Charles Terry and Rory Wood converted. Wood kicked a penalty early in the second half but then Barnard Castlewithstood some heavy pressure until Durham finally scored out wide through Rick Currie to make the score 15-8.

Tait settled the game with another excellent finish and Wood completed a good day with the boot by converting from the touchline.

Bradford Grammar's hopes were extinguished by BingleyGrammar. Tom Rock and Paul Baker scored the tries and Chris Shaw kicked the vital extra points as Bingley fashioned a 12-10 victory thanks to to their superior defence. Bingley travel to Prince Henry's, Otley, who put out another famous cup name, QEGS Wakefield, by the same score.
