BEN JOHNSON - The biggest drugs scandal until now. The Canadian sprinter runs world record time to win 100 metres at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, but tests positive for steroids and is stripped of gold medal.

DIEGO MARADONA - Argentina midfielder tests positive for cocktail of ephedrine-based drugs after playing a brilliant game against Greece at the 1994 World Cup in the America. It's still the biggest drugs scandal in the history of the tournament.

1998 TOUR DE FRANCE - Tour is thrown into chaos when Festina trainer Willy Voet was stopped as he attempted to drive across the Franco-Belgian border with a consignment of drugs. The entire team, including French star Richard Virenque, were thrown out of the race. An emergency world conference was called the following year to tackle doping in all sports because of the impact of the scandal.

MICHELLE SMITH (de Bruin) - Irish swimmer won three gold medals at 1996 Atlanta Olympics but two years later was banned from competition after she was found to have tampered with a urine sample taken at her home.

EAST GERMANY - When the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, evidence emerged that the former Communist state had run systematic drug-taking, handing out blue steroid pills to competitors from an early age. Former world sprint champion Katrin Krabbe, one of the last products off the GDR's conveyor belt of talent, was later involved in drugs scandals.
