Mark Hughes replaced Sven-Goran Eriksson
How they were doing: Despite a fantastic start under Eriksson, Manchester City waned in the second half of the season, culminating in an 8-1 defeat to Middlesbrough. City finished ninth and Eriksson's career at Eastlands was ended, "by mutual consent".
How they are doing now: Despite a plethora of top players and the fact that they are one of the the richest clubs in the world, there is no doubt that Manchester City have underperformed. The signing of Robinho prompted speculation that they would automatically break in to the top four, but City have spent most of the season languishing just above relegation. The signing of Shay Given will now give them a base to build on, and they are now up to mid table.
Verdict: Underperformed given their quality.
