Dennis: Our spirit is unique

Dennis Bergkamp is convinced the camaraderie at Arsenal, shown in yesterday's stunning comeback to beat Middlesbrough, played a big part in Patrick Vieira's decision to stay at Highbury.

Jonathan Woodgate and Michael Owen could not resist the lure of Real Madrid but Vieira stayed and Bergkamp, who scored yesterday, said: "I'm sure the spirit was a factor in him deciding to stay. I'm not sure you can go to another team and get the same feeling.

"Patrick staying shows we are not finished with this team, that we want to go for bigger trophies."

At 3-1 down, Bergkamp feared the club's unbeaten league record was in danger and he added: "We made mistakes we don't normally make and goals were going in easily. But then we had one of the best comebacks in which I've been involved. We had a huddle after the fifth goal - we knew we'd done something special."

Meanwhile Arsene Wenger says negotiations with Sol Campbell over a new contract could last until November.

The Arsenal manager is confident of tying the England defender to a new contract and extending the deals of Lauren and Edu.

Campbell has indicated he wants to stay despite entering the final year of his commitment to the club and interest from Real.

But Wenger revealed it could still take some time to agree a deal. He said: "We have had interest in Sol but we don't want to sell him, we want to extend his contract and we are not far from doing that.
