D-Day for injured Wilkinson

The Lions will give Jonny Wilkinson a full medical examination following his battering during the last weeks of his punishing season.

With Lawrence Dallaglio's Australia tour hinging on a second scan of his damaged right knee, the Lions management are also awaiting confirmation that a lengthy rest has cured the neck condition which forced Wilkinson to be withdrawn from his last three matches for Newcastle.

'We are reliably informed that what Jonny needed was three to four weeks' rest,' said Lions manager Donal Lenihan. 'It is a concern when you see a fellow coming off the field two or three weeks in a row. He will be subjected to a medical along with everyone else before we leave on June 1.' Dallaglio has discussed his knee with Lenihan and said: 'If I have to have an operation, then I would think my chances of making the tour would be remote. I will have a clearer picture after the second scan and be able to make a decision by Saturday.'
