"It is difficult to say whether it has anything to do with expectations because I want to play every game at a high level and that is what all the best players do. I want to carry on improving and getting better.
"Maybe I am putting too much pressure on myself but I want to do well. I don't think it is anything to do with not having a settled role at Spurs - I am not looking for excuses.
"People are telling me not to worry about it and that I will get back to where I was and should just keep working hard."
Davies started last season for Spurs by scoring two goals in his first four games, but since last Christmas he has only managed one goal.
His form and Tottenham's summer buys may have taken Davies out of the limelight at White Hart Lane a little, but he is still very much a star with Wales.
Davies says he enjoys international duty so much because the team are top of their group and everybody involved is optimistic about their chances of qualifying for next summer's European Championship.
He added: "We have got a very positive squad and everybody is enjoying their football. It is great to be a part of it. Now I am with Wales I am feeling good."
That feel good factor received a further fillip today as Craig Bellamy was with the squad again after having a scan on a knee injury which has kept him out of Newcastle's last three matches.
His chances of playing against Italy are rated as low but he will be put through his paces today.
Meanwhile, Chris Perry, who left White Hart Lane for a month's loan at Charlton, believes his Spurs career is over.
He moved to The Valley while Charlton's Paul Konchesky moved to Spurs for a similar period.
Perry, 30, has been overlooked this season and the former Wimbledon defender is now set for an debut against champions Manchester United on 13 September.
Perry said: "I just want the challenge to play first-team football again. I have not even made the bench lately. Glenn Hoddle clearly has different ideas and thought other players would be better.
"I want the move to become a permanent one and I'm sure both teams will be looking at myself and Paul Konchesky to see how well we perform." Sam Allardyce has been foiled in a deadline-day bid to sign former Spurs striker Sergei Rebrov, after the Ukraine striker was refused a work permit.
Neil Sullivan made his Chelsea debut last night in a 2-0 reserve team win over former club Spurs at Aldershot.
The Spurs line-up included newly signed South Africa defender OJ Mabizela and Darren Anderton, who was stepping up his bid for full fitness.
