Daniela closes in on first title

Daniela Hantuchova, the 19-year-old who is seeded 11 at Wimbledon next week, today signalled her intention of taking her first grass-court title in the Britannic Asset Management Championships at Eastbourne.

"I have a chance, I feel really confident about this tournament," said Hantuchova after booking her place in the semi-finals with a 7-6, 6-1 win over Amy Frazier today.

Hantuchova had to save three set points in the ninth game when the 29-year-old American, playing here for for the 10th time, was at her most dominant position against the grass-court novice.

But once the 5ft 11in Slovakian had captured the first set, she carved out a quick victory. She admitted that her confidence was based on her victory in the previous round against former world No 1 Martina Navratilova.

She smiled: "Not many players have beaten Martina on grass."

Eastbourne tournament officials had more than 200 complaints today following No1 seed Jelena Dokic's attack on the scheduling-which saw the Yugoslav put on No 1 Court and Navratilova on Centre Court.

One official said: "This is a garden party tournament, very historic, expectations are high, and the main complaint is they did not get a chance to see the No 1 seed on Centre Court because it clashed with Martina Navratilova who is a legend here."
