We’ll split the challenge four ways

The Evening Standard has joined forces with Prudential to enter a team of four in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 with each rider doing 25 miles apiece. All four are looking forward to the day, if not the distance. Here are their stories.

On Sunday, more than 20,000 riders will take part in the second Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100. It promises to be a bigger event than last year, starting out from the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in the east of the capital, heading through the City of London, down to Hampton Court and through the beautiful Surrey countryside, before returning to the capital for a thrilling finish on The Mall.

Cycling experience?

Very little. I have done a couple of large rides. That’s about it!

Which leg of the event are you going to do?

I am up first, starting at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, heading through London to Hampton Court.

How has your training gone?

Not great. I have been out a few times, but I’m hoping my running and football playing will give me enough fitness to get me through.

What part of the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 are you looking forward to the most?

Riding through the City of London with no cars on the road.

Cycling experience?

Very limited. The last time I owned a bike was several years ago. I rarely used it. Someone stole it and it took me weeks to notice.

Which leg of the event are you going to do?

The second leg, from Hampton Court Palace to Newlands Corner.

How has your training gone?

Surprisingly well. My first 10-mile ride was too much like hard labour for me, but I’m now managing some longer distances and climbing hills without total exhaustion.
