Crunch talks to put Lee Westwood on top

Lee Westwood's manager believes a summit meeting of the team surrounding the world No2 may have put him on course for a maiden Major title at the US PGA Championship, which starts tomorrow.

Andrew 'Chubby' Chandler hopes to clinch a 'Chubby Slam' of all four Majors come the conclusion of the final round at the Atlanta Athletic Club on Sunday - clients Charl Schwartzel, Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke have respectively won this season's Masters, US Open and Open.

And he would be ecstatic if the 93rd US PGA went the way of Westwood, a close friend with whom he co-owns the race horse Hoof It, winner of the prestigious Stewards' Cup on the final day of last month's Glorious Goodwood.

Chandler revealed how he swung into action straight after Clarke's emotional victory at Royal St George's where Westwood, a top-three finisher in five of the last nine Majors, failed to make the halfway cut.

He said: "The Tuesday after The Open wasn't spent with Darren celebrating. It was spent with Lee trying to work out how to win the US PGA.

"We had a meeting with his caddie Billy Foster, his coach Pete Cowen, and his physio Steve McGregor who has added an awful lot of structure to Lee's practice and his life.

"We all sat down and had an open discussion about where things might have gone wrong, where things should go right, and then put a plan in place to sort it out. He seems to be really up for the challenge."

Part of Chandler's plan of action included arranging sessions for Westwood with putting guru Dave Stockton and leading sports psychologist Bob Rotella, and it seems to have worked.
