Surrey lift the gloom with world record run spree

Surrey have not had much to celebrate this season but the rain clouds parted long enough for the Lions to set a new world record for 40-overs cricket by smashing 386 for three against Glamorgan in the Clydesdale Bank 40.

And it could have been 400-plus had the innings not been cut short by two overs at the Brit Insurance Oval.

Skipper Rory Hamilton-Brown clouted five sixes as he raced to 115 off 69 balls — his first one-day century — and shared an opening stand of 190 with Steven Davies, whose 88 came off 55 deliveries.

Mark Ramprakash and Matthew Spriegel then weighed in with an unbeaten stand of 142 for the fourth wicket. Ramprakash struck 10 fours and two sixes in his 85 and Spriegel faced only 39 balls for his undefeated 56.

Chris Tremlett soon had Robert Croft caught behind before a further heavy downpour threatened Surrey's progress.

The rain finally relented and Glamorgan resumed their reply at 8.30pm with a revised target of 227 in 20 overs.
