Jonathan Trott waits for spin cycle to change

He is having a scan today and if it shows any structural damage he is likely to fly home.

While England would be loath to make a big point of it, Finn’s departure would be a significant loss. He is the quickest of their bowlers on this tour and the form of Umesh Yadav, India’s more muscular equivalent, has demonstrated that pace has a part to play in this series.

Finn was expected to be fit for ­Friday’s match and England are ­mystified now about the extent of the trouble.

If the scan points to a swift recovery he will have a match with the newly arrived England Performance Programme squad next week and whatever happens in Mumbai, England would then want him in the team for the third Test in Kolkata.

Little has worked for England on tour this year.

Of the 112 wickets they have lost in six Tests, 90 have been to spin. Perhaps more worrying is that seven went to seam in the Ahmedabad defeat and that India’s fast bowlers were superior to the trio from England, not so long ago the most vaunted attack in the world.

Trott said: “It’s very foreign to players. It’s just what you’re used to, as a child growing up you hone your ­techniques in the country you grow up in.

“To change and to adjust is probably the challenge, but we have players who can do that.

“You saw Alastair Cook, you’ll probably find he doesn’t play like any of the Indian batsmen, his sort of method, but it works for him. In the changing room we have people who can do that, everyone has scored runs in the sub-continent so there’s no reason why we can’t.”

Cook’s performance in Ahmedabad, when he scored 217 runs in the match, including a heroic rearguard 176 in the second innings follow on, may serve almost to shame his colleagues into matching him.

Trott has averaged only 30.92 away from home this year, which includes his fighting 112 in the defeat against Sri Lanka in Galle last March.

He said: “Everyone’s individual. What can you take from him is his determination and stubbornness ‘this is the way I play, this is what I’m going to do, I’m not going to try and change, this is going to work for me and it’s going to happen’ and it did.

“For his first Test match as the main captain it was a great effort. He leads from the front and set the standard for what us as batsmen want to be able do. I certainly want to do that, every single one from one to No9 wants to do that.”
