Warner was waved off by the majority after wastefully reviewing his edge behind off Swann, which hit wicketkeeper Matt Prior's gloves before ballooning to Jonathan Trott at slip.

Swann's double strike came in the space of 11 balls but England made no other headway as Clarke, who did survive a tough dropped chance on 136, otherwise continued to look at ease.

In sunny conditions after a prompt start, Clarke needed almost half an hour - and 15 balls - to add to his overnight 125.

He did so with an edge, at catchable height, for four between slips and gully off the still wicketless James Anderson but then immediately added a much more convincing second boundary from the next delivery - forced off the back foot just in front of point.

The Australia captain had one moment of fortune, on 136, when Tim Bresnan had him driving on the up through a tight off-side ring - where Swann, at short extra-cover, could only parry a half-chance with his left hand over his head but not as far as Kevin Pietersen behind him.

Clarke's next run took him to his highest score in an Ashes series.

But the same Bresnan plan again very nearly worked soon afterwards when Clarke chipped a boundary agonisingly just over the head of Anderson at mid-off.

Smith's rush of blood cost him his wicket, with Jonny Bairstow running around for a routine catch at mid-wicket to bring Warner to the crease.

The left-hander forced a cover drive to the ropes but was out soon after as Swann, enjoying a pitch that was offering plenty of turn, grabbed his fourth scalp of the innings.

Australia pressed on, with new man Brad Haddin almost clearing the ropes to bring up 100 runs against Anderson.

Anderson's frustrations, on his home pitch, further grew when the Australia wicketkeeper was handed a life when Prior put down an under-edge off him.
