Crespo could hassle Jimmy

Hernan Crespo remains Chelsea's number one target, prompting fresh doubts about the future of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.

Chelsea, who expect to complete the signing of Russian international midfielder Alexei Smertin later this week, are still keen to add a striker to their blue chip squad and the 27-year-old Internazionale star has replaced Christian Vieri as their top target.

Hasselbaink went on as a second-half substitute to score Chelsea's winner at Liverpool on Sunday and says he wants to stay at Stamford Bridge.

The probable arrival of another striker at the club before the transfer window closes at the end of this month could limit Hasselbaink's first-team appearances but the Dutchman says he will fight for his place.

Chelsea intend to send Smertin out on loan to another Premiership club as soon as he signs.

It is felt he will take time to adjust to the English game and the best way for him to do that is to play first-team football elsewhere for a while as his immediate chances at Chelsea will be limited.

Portsmouth are one club interested.

Meanwhile, Chelsea's chances of signing Claude Makelele appear to be receding as the Frenchman's row with Real Madrid escalated.
