"After that time seemed to go awfully quick," he said.
"I wanted time to stand still to allow me to rearrange things but no matter how I looked at it I couldn't see an effective formation which would cause them problems. I knew a set-piece would be our likeliest way back in because it wasn't a day for fluid football. There was too much at stake. The pitch was too lively.
"But the more we chopped and change, the more ragged we became."
Despite their team's failure to win, at fulltime the home fans invaded the pitch and remained there while police horses made gentle attempts to push them back.
In the melee two Brentford fans stood stock still facing the Ealing Road end 50 yards away where the Reading party was in full swing, silently holding up a huge club flag.
The meaning of the gesture was clear - we are still here, it said. Coppell delivered much the same message to his squad in training this morning.
"When it comes to lifting the team for the play-offs, it's like being an alcoholic," he said.
"They have to find rock bottom before they can work their way up. If we had just squeezed into sixth position with this same point then we would really be up for it. That's how we have to think of it.
"Time will get them ready for it and the sun will shine again."
