Clegg gave the heavyweight task of landing Britain's first taste of glory on the first full day of competition to lightweight judo player Craig Fallon.
The 21-year-old world and European championship silver medallist goes on Saturday in the under-60 kilogramme competition.
Later tomorrow, the men's synchronised 10m diving pairing of Peter Waterfield and part-time soap actor Leon Taylor will look to improve on their unlucky fourth place in Sydney.
Taylor, who has appeared as an injured diver in Hollyoaks, is ready to rise to Clegg's challenge. He said: "Fourth is probably the worst place you can come in an Olympic Games, especially in a subjective sport.
"But that has given us our motivation, guts and determination over the past four years to make sure we don't come fourth again."
There are great hopes on Sunday for 20-year-old Nicole Cooke, the women's road racer who last month won the Tour of Italy.
The last of Clegg's potential weekend wonders is Ian Peel, the 45-year-old trap shooter who has set his sights on going one better than his Sydney silver.
