"Every player wants an FA Cup winner's medal, but because it guarantees a place in Europe that makes it an even more important tie for us.
"Winning the Cup will put us in the UEFA Cup, but it is Champions League football that we really want.
"We won't let anything get in the way of our attempts to make that tournament because it is the highest level of club football possible.
"All players at big clubs want to compete at the highest level because it is good for their careers, so that remains our main target.
"I think that we can achieve both our targets, especially if we continue our current form."
Chelsea are three points behind fourth-placedNewcastle, but have played a game more.
Their chances of catching the Magpies were not, however, helped over Easter when they followed up a victory over Derby with a disappointing draw at struggling Ipswich.
Melchiot added: "The Easter schedule was very difficult for us physically, but we are fairly happy to come away from it with a win and a draw.
"The Ipswich match was not a great game because both sides were very tired, but we are unhappy not to have taken all three points."
The trip to Ipswich was Chelsea's second game in three days and Melchiot admits he is still coming to terms with the sheer number of matches that the side plays.
He revealed: "Claudio Ranieri has said that we play too many games in England and I have to agree. At the moment I am really tired and I'm feeling a pain in my thigh and that is probably caused by playing two games so close to one another."
