Going into this match Real Madrid had scored ten goals in their previous two home games and won nine on the bounce. All talk of a possible rout was quelled at kick-off when it became apparent just how awful Madrid were. This was more like the Juande Ramos that Spurs fans will remember. For 90 minutes his side knocked the ball around well, but with little purpose. The Spanish giants certainly looked trendy in their shiny white jerseys, but whenever they got anywhere near the Liverpool goal they froze like deer in headlights. For their part the Reds defended stoutly, but it was just too easy for them. For all the hype, flair and ability, Real flattered to deceive, and Liverpool punished them eight minutes from time when Yossi Benayoun headed home Fabio Aurelio's in-swinging free-kick. Had it not been for the fact that attacking-wise Liverpool barely turned up, Madrid could easily have lost by a much bigger margin.
Verdict: Liverpool will sail through. Real Madrid can't possibly play worse in the second leg and should offer some threat, but Liverpool will have Gerrard from the start and at Anfield, on a European night, are virtually untouchable.
