Celebrate with Summer Fete as she bids to thwart Stoute

Sir Michael Stoute has won six of the last 10 runnings of the Celebration Mile at Goodwood and Main Aim would appear to hold an obvious chance of bagging yet another victory for the trainer in the £100,000 contest.

The five-year-old has won two Group Three contests at Haydock, which is a much flatter track than the South Downs venue, and is likely to go off a warm favourite in the race despite having only his second run over a mile in 17 starts.

The testing ground at the course, which passed a precautionary inspection this morning because of the recent heavy rain, will not inconvenience Main Aim since he has won on soft before.

However, he is a headstrong colt and he may use up too much energy in the taxing conditions on this tougher track and could prove a real handful for Eddie Ahern, who has replaced the injured Ryan Moore.

The Richard Hannon-trained Vitznau appears out of his depth and while Poet's Voice, who is the mount of Frankie Dettori, is the only one of the four runners with winning form at Group Two level, there is a question mark about his ability to handle soft ground.

But if there is to be a shock, then Bryan Smart's filly Summer Fete (3.05pm), who is bred to relish the soft ground, could provide it. The four-year-old won the Group Three Oak Tree Stakes against her own sex here last year and while well held in the Hungerford Stakes at Newbury last time, Smart thinks a change of tactics might help.
