Carling: Jason is best as wide boy

To get the best out of this special player, England must leave him out wide, where his presence is a source of potential danger to every opposition side.

With Robinson likely to burst on to the scene from full-back or come off the wing looking for work, he is someone the defence cannot ignore. No matter how hard the opposition midfield try to stick to agreed defensive plans, Robinson is always in their minds.

That creates space for others and, if he doesn't exploit the gaps, then a team-mate will be able to make something happen. We saw on the Lions tour that he was a world class finisher and those tries at Murray-field only confirmed what a lethal weapon he can be for England.

Will Greenwood, of Harlequins, played well against Scotland and accepted the role of the experienced general but his combination with Tindall is not going to be the one to take us all the way in the World Cup.

We need to find a pair of centres who can combine to become a potent force, not a workmanlike one.

It's difficult to gauge just how good the England win over Scotland was because the opposition was so disappointing. To trouble England, the Scots had to kick their goals and hold on to the ball. They did neither.

Making a valid judgement on the Irish after their 54-10 beating of Wales yesterday is also hard because it appeared as if some of the Welsh players wanted to be anywhere but on that pitch in Dublin.

You can only play against what turns up on the day and for England and Ireland that meant beating teams who couldn't really hurt them.

The Irish looked comfortable and will arrive at Twickenham in two weeks time full of confidence. I will be delighted if England refuse to mention a possible Grand Slam right up to the final game because they also have a difficult assignment in France and this season it really is a case of taking one match at a time. Nothing can be taken for granted in this championship.
