Davis, the Californian who finished fifth in Sunday's 400m final in Manchester just three days after picking up his British passport, had urged selectors to pick him in the 4x400m relay squad but his name has not yet been included.

Jones explained: "The selectors still want to see a bit more of what Malachi is capable of as last weekend was obviously the first time we'd seen him.

"Also, to be fair to the British lads, we wanted to keep the third individual place in the 400m and the last relay spot open to give them another chance to show what they can do."

Davis, 28, whose mother hails from Shepherds Bush, is now expected to run at Loughborough at the weekend in a last bid to impress the selectors before they reconvene next Monday to make their final deliberations.

Denise Lewis's hopes of defending her Olympic title in Athens have been hit by the news that her injury is worse than first feared.

She faces a race simply to be fit for next month's heptathlon after aggravating a recurring foot problem while competing in the long jump at the trials in Manchester at the weekend.

Lewis will not be able to train for at least a fortnight and she said today: "I will now enter a period of rehabilitation which will decide whether I am able to compete at the Olympics which are only five weeks away." Realistically, even if Lewis makes it to Athens now, the 31-year-old is unlikely to be in any shape to do herself justice.

One other major selection issue remains unresolved.

Neither Chris Tomlinson, who won the trial but has yet to achieve the 'A' qualifying standard, nor Nathan Morgan, who has the standard but could only finish third in Manchester, has yet been named in the long jump. Jones, though, admitted that Tomlinson was "in the driving seat".

Jones was also very excited by the team's young guns as London's new 20-year-old quarter-miling sensation Christine Ohuruogu was officially awarded her major championship debut.
