Jamie Baulch today thanked the British selectors for giving him an individual place for the 400m alongside Mark Richardson and Daniel Caines. Although he has not run the official qualifying standard of 45.72secs this season, he was chosen on last year's performances.
Former world indoor champion Baulch said: "I am delighted to have been selected. I would naturally have preferred to have run the qualifying time this year but due to injury, my progress has been slower than I had hoped. I hope to do myself and Britain justice."
Meanwhile, athletes competing at Edmonton will be subject to tests for the bloodboosting drug erythropoietin for the first time at a World Championships.
Following the introduction of a blood and urine test at last year's Olympics, the International Amateur Athletic Federation have introduced their own tests for this year's event.
Going against the proposals of his predecessor, new Olympic chief Jacques Rogge has ruled out any reduction in the list of banned doping substances for athletes.
"With all due respect to Juan Antonio Samaranch, he is not aware of the reality in sports medicine and doping,î Rogge said today.
