Button’s big season

The 2009 season has been an incredible contrast to 2008 for Jenson Button. Last season, driving a very poor Honda, he failed to score a point and the team effectively wrote the season off and decided to concentrate on preparing for 2009. However in December 2008 Honda pulled out of F1 completely, leaving Jenson Button without a job. An 11th hour takeover by Ross Brawn, rescued Button and the team.

The key moments from Jenson Button's season:

Australia – Button claimed pole on the first race of the season and this allowed him to avoid the chaos that occurred in mid-field as the race began. By lap 6 he had already started to establish a decent lead over the rest of the pack. The use of the safety car meant that Button's lead was closed however he was able to hold his lead from start to finish recording his and Brawn's first win of the season.

Malaysia – Button won his second race in a row in heavy rain in Malaysia. Button qualified in pole but had a poor start to the race and was in fourth after just a few turns.He managed to pass Alonso on the thirteenth turn and then passed Jano Trulli and Niko Rosberg after the first round of pit-stops to take the lead. Due to the heavy rain that started to fall the race was stopped at the 33rd lap and meant Button claimed his second win of the season, but all points were halved due to the premature finish.

China – Button started the race fourth on the grid. He managed to climb up into second behind Sebastian Vettel but had a continuing battle with Mark Webber. After the two passed each other on a couple of occasions Button crossed the finish line in third behind Vettel and Webber.

Bahrain –Button started fourth and performed an impressive manoeuvre to pass Hamilton at the start of the second lap to take third. After the cars in front of him pitted he claimed first and managed to open a up a good lead. He eventually crossed the line 7 seconds ahead of the second placed Sebastian Vettel.

Spain – Button conceded first place to Barrichello at the start of the race and the two Brawn cars pulled ahead of the field. Button was on a two stop strategy and his team-mate on a three and when Barrichello pitted for the second time Button passed him. Button led from then on and finished 13 seconds ahead.

Monaco –Button was desperate to win on his home turf, since he lives in Monaco. He qualified well and occupied first on the grid. At one point during the race he had a 15 second lead over team-mate Barrichello who was in second. He eventually finished 7 seconds ahead since he had slowed down to avoid the cars at the back of the grid. On winning he didn't park in the winners area and so had to run down much of the track, receiving great applause on the way.
