But chairman David Morgan has already stressed players will not be forced to travel if - like Australian spinner Stuart MacGill - they have moral objections to what Wisden Cricketers' Almanack now describes as "the wretched tyranny that is Robert Mugabe's Zimbabwe." Butcher said: "We're still waiting until the Board make their decision as to whether we go or not.
"Then it will be down to individuals such as myself to make a decision as to whether I want to go. I'm not going to elaborate on that now.
"I'm going to wait and see what my employers say and then the decision will be made on a personal level after that."
Zimbabwe are currently playing - and losing to - Sri Lanka without all their leading white cricketers, who have rebelled over the sacking of captain Heath Streak and what they claim are politically motivated selection policies.
That issue may be resolved by the weekend with the 'rebels' currently considering a peace proposal from the Zimbabwe Cricket Union.
But the row over whether England should tour is likely to drag on - and players such as Butcher will almost certainly find themselves having to make difficult decisions.
