However, Tottenham's chase for Santos star Diego looks set to end in frustration for a second time.
Spurs had a £5.6m bid for the midfielder rejected last summer and then pulled out of further negotiations because of problems with the player's attempt to obtain an Italian passport.
That hurdle remains a major question and Pleat said: "I would be surprised if the Diego transfer happens in January now. He still hasn't been able to obtain an Italian passport at present."
If Diego is granted an Italian passport he would qualify automatically under EU regulations to play in England but at present he needs a work permit because he has not played enough games for Brazil.
Pleat is waiting to hear from chairman Daniel Levy just how much of the £15m, to be raised by the convertible share offer announced yesterday, will be available to spend on new players.
Levy said: "The share offers will strengthen the general financial resources of Tottenham and, most significantly, they will provide the club with more flexibility in the player trading market."
