Beware the man with dancing feet

The game against Australia two weeks ago provides the perfect example. The Wallabies had precious little possession.

They were tempted into kicking what scraps they did get to test Robinson. They kicked from their own half most of the time and did it poorly.

Robinson had oodles of room to wind up and decide what he was going to do. He invariably beat the first man. He is also adept at making the ball available to his support players when he is eventually tackled, thus ensuring possession for his team. He only had to kick the ball once in the entire game against Australia - one of the best defensive outfits and smartest teams in the world.

Against Romania we saw what he can do against a lesser opposition. His solo try from 65 metres out after receiving a pass from Dan Luger was one of the most exciting bits of running I have ever seen, even after taking into consideration the quality of the opposition.

He simply has the ability to go all the way to the try line every time he touches the ball whether that is from 80 metres or 10.

The English team are playing a style of rugby that suits him. They are playing the game with a lot of width. Have a look at where players are positioned when England have the ball. They use the whole field.

This pulls the opposition defence apart and then the big England pack start to drive through the middle - sucking in defenders as they go, particularly the opposition backrow and inside backs.

These are the guys who organise and make the tackles. Once they are gone, it is time to spread the ball. Most of the time there is an overlap and, if there isn't one, the very worst result is a one-on-one situation with space.

Show me someone who can stop Robinson one-on-one every time!

But I still believe teams could put pressure on Robinson not because he has not got enough experience playing full-back, but because any player in that position can be tested, moved around and caught out.

Firstly, Robinson needs space, admittedly less than most, but he still needs it, so the chaser needs to arrive at the same time as the ball.

And you have to move Robinson around. Making him run to pick up the ball and then kick it into touch. He is a good kicker of the ball when he has time but if this is denied then, like everyone else, it makes the job harder.

On the whole, however, his ability to score tries and make breaks from any situation and from any position on the field far outweigh any perceived deficiencies.

I can't wait to see him play again this Saturday against the Springboks.
