Betting scams that left racing in a fix

FRANCASAL - The horse's 10-1 win in the Spa Selling Stakes at Bath on July 16, 1953 was set up as a scam to make five men £1million in bets. The conspirators, led by bookmaker Harry Kateley, replaced the moderate French horse Francasal with a better horse, also from France, called Santa Amaro. Off-course bookmakers suspected betting patterns but the telephone line to Bath racecourse had been cut. Those involved were later found guilty of conspiring to defraud.

GAY FUTURE - Cartmel on August Bank Holiday Monday 1974 was the setting for one of the most famous scandals of all time. Permit trainer Anthony Collins declared Gay Future to run in a novice hurdle at the Lakeland track and on the morning of the race, he was heavily backed. Bookmakers stopped taking bets but poor travel connections to Cartmel saw them arrive too late as Gay Future won by 15 lengths at 10-1. The other horses were declared non-runners - in fact they had not even left for the courses.

FLOCKTON GREY - Two-year-old Flockton Grey provided trainer Stephen Wiles with his first Flat winner when recording a 20-length win under Kevin Darley at Leicester in 1982. Flockton Grey had been backed to win by an estimated £200,000 and investigators concluded that Darley's mount was in fact a three-year-old called Good Hand.

IN THE MONEY - The horse won the Hatherleigh Selling Handicap Hurdle at Newton Abbot on 28 August 1978, by 20 lengths at a well-backed 8-1. The nine-year-old was John Bowles' first winner as a trainer but a tip-off prompted an investigation but by the time the investigators reached Bowles' yard, In The Money had been destroyed at a local abattoir due to alleged lameness. It later transpired the actual winner of the race was a horse called Cobbler's March, a five-time winner, who was identified by a former owner.

ANGEL 'JACOBS' - One of the most bizarre scandals in British racing occurred in 1998 when amateur jockey Angel 'Jacobs' was unmasked as a former professional jockey. The Puerto Rican, real name Angel Monserrate, wowed the amateur ranks during the 1998 season, recording his first win on the Willie Musson-trained Bold Faith after working at the trainer's stable. Monserrate was revealed as a former professional who had been banned for drug-taking in the US and had later been taken away from Aqueduct racecourse in New York after riding as an amateur under the name of Carlos Castro. He received a 10-year worldwide ban for the 21 rides he took in Britain while posing as an amateur.
