Ban on mad hatters

For the past nine years they have been as much a part of Wimbledon as overpriced strawberries and cream - the faithful hordes of "Henmaniacs" with their flags and hats, rattles and horns, banners and placards bearing inspirational words for their hero.

Now, as part of a major security overhaul, police have banned them from bringing their props to the side of the court.

Condemned by Tim Henman's fans as "miserable" and "killjoy", the move comes as new antiterrorist measures are introduced at this year's tournament - including metal detectors, body searches of all spectators, and a bigger police presence. Even picnic hampers are banned.

Superintendent Simon Ovens, in charge of security, said today: "Banned items include sharp knives, large flags, banners, rattles, klaxons and oversized hats that might obscure other people's views. If brought into the grounds they will be confiscated. We do not wish to spoil anyone's enjoyment but want to ensure a safe championship for all."

The All England Club lists the banned items on its website, along with rulings against "dangerous behaviour, foul or abusive language or obscene gestures", but a spokeswoman promised: "We will judge each item on its own merits."

Among fans objecting today was Richard Bean, 41, head coach at the Holland Park tennis club. He said: "I'm not sure about the whistles and hooters, because that could be distracting to players, but people should be able to relax and wear what they want."
