"It's just a shame the last minute might overshadow that."
Meanwhile, Wise's assistant, Ray Wilkins, argued that the confrontation, which continued in the players' tunnel, should not be blown out of proportion.
"It was a great shame. It had been a decent competitive game of football before that," Wilkins said. "It was also so unfortunate for Dennis. I think there was a lot of frustration on the touchline and Dennis ended up being sent off because he threw a water bottle at the floor and it bounced up and hit the linesman.
"The whole thing looked worse than it was because a lot of players were involved."
The result lifts Millwall to eighth place and rekindles hopes of a serious play-off challenge. They were under sustained pressure for much of the second half but Andy Marshall was in inspired form.
The Millwall goalkeeper's best moment came seven minutes into the second half when he produced a superb save to deny Graham Kavanagh.
However, Dichio's penalty, which came after Collins had needlessly handled, proved enough to secure three precious points.
"We knew how important this game was," Wilkins said. "If we had lost this one, then we could have kissed promotion goodbye.
"We've been through a difficult time and this is always a tough ground to come to. But at least we passed the test last night - and we are back in with a chance now."
