If World No1 Serena wins she will have captured her self-styled " Serena Slam" and join a select group of women who have held all four major titles at the same time.
Having beaten second-seed Venus in the finals of the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open last year, 21-year-old Serena is trying to become the fifth woman to hold all four titles at once. Only Maureen Connolly, Margaret Court, Martina Navratilova and Steffi Graf have previously achieved that feat, with Connolly, Court and Graf capturing all four in the same calendar year.
Serena said: "Obviously, I would like to win, but Venus wants to win this one as well and get her year started. Who knows? She is probably trying to win all four as well.
"This is an extra special Grand Slam because our critics say we never have a strong start to the year. Venus is actually playing a little better than me, so I just have to pull something out of my back pocket to be able to go on to the next level."
Serena, who has won five and lost five against Venus since their first match on tour in the second round here in 1998, is struggling with blisters on her right foot. Venus is seeking her first major singles title since winning the 2001 US Open.
The sisters were both winners today when they beat Paola Suarez, of Argentina, and Spain's Virginia Ruano Pascual, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the final of the women's doubles.
Twenty-eight years after reaching her first Australian Open final, Navratilova, now 46, partnered Leander Paes to reach the mixed doubles final, where they will play Australia's Todd Woodbridge and Greek Eleni Daniilidou.
Rainer Schuettler, of Germany, beat a weary Andy Roddick 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 today to reach his first Grand Slam final. The American was hampered by a wrist injury sustained in his epic five-hour quarter-final win over Younes El Aynaoui two days ago. The 26-yearold Schuettler became only the second German, after Boris Becker, to reach the men's final in the event's 98-year history.
Schuettler will play Andre Agassi in Sunday's final when the American second seed is chasing a fourth Open crown, a record for an overseas player.
BBC Television have signed a fiveyear deal to continue their coverage of the Stella Artois tournament at Queen's Club.
