Rio 2016 Olympics won't be clean, warns UK Athletics chief

“We want London to be the first transparent, clean World Championships ever,” he told Standard Sport. “That’s what we have to fight for.

“For me, personally, I think next year’s Olympics in Rio is too close to aspire to do that but for London that should be the aspiration and a realistic one at that.”

The London 2017 board met yesterday to discuss the championships with doping top of the agenda.

“One of the things we debated was what can we do to crank up the doping controls for the championships,” said Warner. “What are the perfect parameters and to ensure we have systems in place that are beyond reproach? That is a realistic ambition to have, we have to have that ambition for the future of the sport.”

In Geneva yesterday, Pound highlighted the women’s 800metres from London 2012 and called for the gold medallist Mariya Savinova and bronze medallist Ekaterina Poistogova to be handed lifetime bans along with three other athletes, four coaches and a doctor. Responding to Pound’s “sabotage” claim, Warner said: “Will people who were inside the Olympic Stadium feel cheated? I don’t think so.

“People still had a great time with Super Saturday.

“But the athletes certainly will be, to have been denied medals. [New Zealand shot putter] Valerie Adams is, for me, the best case in point. She was denied her moment in the spotlight by an athlete that was proven to have cheated [Nadzeya Ostapchuk].”

The commission has pushed for the reallocation of medals but while Warner welcomed the move, he also said that would be insufficient payback for the athletes who have suffered.

He added: “They’re just chocolate medals aren’t they? It’s all very shabby and you can never replicate that moment of winning in the stadium.”

Warner also backed calls for Russia to be suspended from all competition. He said: “The IAAF is meeting later this week to consider suspending Russia and my strong advice would be to do that.”
