Athens warning over security

Three bombs exploded outside a police station before dawn and although no injuries were reported the attack came exactly 100 days before the opening ceremony on 13 August.

IOC officials said they were being kept up to date with the Greek investigation into the blasts.

A spokesman for the BOA said: "It does not seem to be connected directly with the Olympic facilities. Our position is that we expect to take a full and complete team to the Games. All the provisions for the team are in hand."

In Sydney, Australia's Olympic officials ordered a review of their own security arrangements for Games, saying it still planned to send a team but would "never stand in the way of any athlete making a personal choice" to stay away.

The British team are regarded as high-risk terrorists targets.

The British embassy is one of the most heavily guarded embassies in Athens with concrete blocks outside to stop truck bombings and armed guards on patrol.

Standard Sport revealed in March that undercover British guards will accompany top stars such as Paula Radcliffe when they leave secure areas like the athletes' village.

The IOC also stressed today that Athens would definitely stage the Games despite delays in construction and the security concerns.

An IOC spokeswoman described suggestions that there were plans to move the event to Sydney as "nonsense".

Britain's top rower and IOC member Matthew Pinsent said: "The Olympics are going to go ahead and they are going ahead in Athens."

Meanwhile it was announced today that Sir Roger Bannister, celebrating the 50th anniversary of his first subfour minute mile this week, will carry the Olympic torch when it visits London on 26 June.

With the London leg of the worldwide relay starting at Wimbledon on the middle Saturday of the championships, Tim Henman was also included in a list of torch bearers. Former Olympians Sir Steven Redgrave, Sharron Davies and Mary Peters, former cricketer Ian Botham and exboxer Frank Bruno will also carry the torch during its day in the capital.
