Arsenal anger at referee

Arsenal today vented their anger over German referee Herbert Fandel for the two red cards that marred their Champions League draw with PSV Eindhoven.

Manager Arsene Wenger was stunned at the dismissals of Patrick Vieira and Lauren inside 13 second-half minutes, accusing the referee of doublestandards over his failure to even book PSV's Mark van Bommel despite a host of fouls.

Wenger said: "The referee was more lenient with Van Bommel than anyone else on the pitch."

In a highly-charged match, in which Arsenal scorer Thierry Henry had a lighter thrown at him, Arsenal survived with a 1-1 draw but the French striker aggravated an Achilles injury and may miss Sunday's clash at Liverpool.

Vieira and Lauren will now miss the last group game against Norwegian champions Rosenborg at Highbury.

Vieira was too upset to talk about his sending-off, but Lauren said: "It was harsh. All I said was that their player, Van Bommel, should get a yellow card and on the second occasion I touched the ball. I am disappointed because I will miss an important game."

Sol Campbell, who was incensed by a late lunge by Van Bommel in the first half, said: "Their players were getting away with a lot of fouls. The referee could have given Patrick the benefit of the doubt. We were down to 10 men and he could have given him another chance. Van Bommel? The referee has to make decisions but he was lucky."

Ashley Cole said: "The referee was too quick to get his yellow card out for Patrick.

Look at how many fouls Van Bommel gave away. It was like 10 and he got away with it."

PSV captain Van Bommel, linked with a move to Spurs last summer, hit back, saying: "I don't agree with what Mr Wenger or the players said.
