Anderton still to agree Spurs deal

Tottenham midfielder Darren Anderton today revealed he is yet to agree a new two-year contract with the club.

Contrary to reports suggesting he had agreed to put pen to paper on a further contract at White Hart Lane, Anderton remains free to quit the club under the Bosman ruling at the end of the season.

The England international said the on-going saga is unlikely to be settled next week either. Anderton strongly denied suggestions that the club want to tie him down on a 'pay-as-you-play' basis because of his constant injuries.

Anderton said: "I haven't agreed a new two-year contract and I'm unlikely to put pen to paper early next week as has been suggested.

"My agent had a meeting with the club yesterday but my position hasn't changed. Talks are ongoing.

"It has been said the sticking point has been that Tottenham want to offer me a pay-as-you-play deal because of my injury problems, but that isn't the case.

"There are a lot of things being discussed but we're not a million miles apart." However, Anderton is unhappy that the contract negotiations are dragging on. He is recovering from an Achilles injury and returned from America last week and held detailed discussions with manager Glenn Hoddle about his future plans.
