He has warmed to his task quickly, too, judging by the way Deportivo La Coruna's players spoke as one in identifying him as the main threat ahead of tonight's Group A tie at Anfield. Deportivo coach Javier Irureta hailed him as Liverpool's talisman', while Brazilian Mauro da Silva reflected on a series of uncompromising midfield tussles with the 22-year old in La Liga, saying: 'Xabi is a very intelligent player who has all the qualities to do well in the English game.

'Whenever you are up against him, you have to limit the possession he has. You cannot let him run the game.'

While Benitez played down facing Spanish opposition for the first time since leaving Valencia in the summer, his most significant signing explained his motives for choosing Liverpool and warned team-mates to beware a player he dubbed 'The Killer'.

As he prepared for a tie that could virtually end Deportivo's qualifying hopes - following a return of one point from two games - Alonso admitted that success at Anfield may take time but he is prepared to wait.

'I want to win titles and although it may take a little longer here, it will be worth the wait if we can build things up again.

'That is the aim for the future, but for now we must try to see off Deportivo and take a big step towards the next phase. They are very difficult to break down, but they also have extremely dangerous players up front.

'Juan Valeron is a wonderful talent, while Walter Pandiani is one of the best players in the game in his position. He is a killer in front of goal, a typical No 9 who is good on the ground and particularly adept in the air. He jumps so well and has outstanding control with his headers.

'He is also very strong, and I have warned Sami Hyypia and Jamie Carragher about his threat.'

Benitez added: 'I know all about Deportivo, of course. In fact, I have a video of my Valencia team beating them 3-0 last March, so I may just play that to the boys later on.'
